Rural Murcia |
Much is written about the Spanish Costas and we are all familiar with the beautiful beaches, marinas and crystal clear seas, but very little is written in English about the beautiful countyside in Spain and in particular the Region of Murcia.
The Region of Murcia has everything to offer the inquisitive visitor, on our journeys into rural Murcia we felt like intrepid travellers, going where no one had been before. Indeed many travellers have been before, but there seems to be very little in the way of Tourist Information about the area. Here are a few of our favourite places that we ‘discovered’. We would love to hear from you about any places you have discovered on your journey through rural Murcia

Balneario Archena Tourist InformationBalnearo Archena is a lush, green, leafy oasis in the middle of otherwise arid landscape. It is found about 2km from the centre of Archena just inland from Murcia City. It comes as quite a surprise to see the paved street and the 4 star hotels. Of course the main attraction is the thermal baths with temperatures of 50 degrees and therapeutic properties, but it is a wonderful place to ‘escape’ from modern living and enjoy the walks along the river Segura, relaxation in the Spa hotels or a drive through the beautiful Ricote Valley
Calblanque Nature Reserve Tourist InformationCalblanque is a beautiful stretch of mountains and Costa Calida coast line which the ‘powers that be’ in the Region of Murcia have decided to preserve as a natural park. It is a haven for nature lovers with secluded beaches, mountain walks, birds and many wild flowers. It can only be reached by car along a dusty road from La Manga, but it is well worth the effort. It is one of the few parts of the Spanish coastline where building is prohibited.
Ricote Valley Tourist InformationThe Ricote Valley was the last stronghold of the Moors in Spain, and is one of the most beautiful and undiscovered parts of the Region of Murcia, along the fertile plains of the river Segura. The region clings to its Arab heritage, as shown by the numerous remains from this period, including the ingenious rural irrigation system.
Monastario de Santa Eulalia Tourist InformationSix Kilometres from the town of Totana is the beautiful Monastario de Santa Eulalia (it's true name is La Ermita de la Santa Eulalia de Merida ). Now completely renovated as a four star hotel, this impressive building is almost hidden by the forest of pine trees and makes a welcome place to stop for lunch on your way to the Sierra Espuna. From here you can leave your car and walk along the mountain paths taking in the breathtaking views from advantage points on your journey. The church next to the Monestario is also worth a visit to see the amazing murals and also Santa Eulalia who smiles down on her visitors.
Sierra Espuna Tourist InformationThe Sierra Espuna is a beautiful mountain park in the centre of the Region of Murcia. It has a spectacular mountain drive which takes you from Totana to Alhama de Murcia or Mula. There is a very good information centre in the park that tells you about the different trails, fauna and flora. You may be lucky enough to see a wild boar or an eagle on your travels. It is also a very popular place for cycling, mountain biking, hiking and strolling along the dedicated mountain trails.
Tomas Maestre Marina Tourist InformationThe Tomas Maestre Marina is the largest Marina in the Region of Murcia. It is located at the northern end of the La Manga Strip on the Mar Menor. From here you can hire a boat, go scuba diving, fishing etc. There is also a ferry which sails to Sandiago de la Ribera every hour and also a tour boat which sails into the Med and around the islands in the Mar Menor. The Marina has a wealth of international restaurants including French, Asian, Italian, Norwegian, Greek, Mexican as well as traditional Spanish and even a Burger King. The long promenades and walkways make this an ideal location for the elderly or disabled as well as the most enthusiastic sports enthusiasts. In fact we think it has something for everyone and is one of our favourite places and although not exactly ‘rural’ we felt is was worth a mention in this section
Santuario de la Virgen Esperanza Tourist InformationThis is a very special place which we came across by accident. It is just a few kilometres North of Calasparra, you will notice a small sign. Leave the main road and it takes you down a winding, mountain road, to the bottom of the valley where the Segura river flows through. (On the way down it is well worth stopping at a vantage point on the right, where you have spectacular views of Calasparra and the paddy fields of rice) On reaching the Sanctuary you will notice the sheer rock face which is home to the sanctuary. Just beyond this is a fabulous restaurant. It usually looks as if it is closed, but if you walk in and go upstairs you will be amazed at the wonderful meal for just a few euros. This is a popular place with the Spanish who, on a Sunday, take a picnic or barbeque and meet up with family and friends by the river
